As the year draws to a close, let’s take a look at how India performed in various global indices in 2022. Here is a summary of the country’s rankings:

Global Gender Gap Index: India was ranked in the Global Gender Gap Index for 2022 by the World Economic Forum (WEF). In 2021, India was ranked 140 out of 156 countries.

The Global Gender Gap Index assesses gender parity across Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment.

Global Hunger Index: India’s ranking in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022 dropped to 107 out of 121 countries, down from 101 the previous year. The GHI has been published annually since 2000.

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index: India saw a significant reduction in poverty between 2005-06 and 2019-21, with the poverty rate falling from 55% to just over 16%. However, India still had the largest number of poor people in the world in 2020, according to the MPI report released by UNDP and OPHI at the University of Oxford.

World Press Freedom Index: India’s ranking in the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders labeled the country as “one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the media” due to various forms of violence against journalists.

World Happiness Index: India’s ranking in the World Happiness Index improved to 136 in 2022 compared to 139 in the previous year. Among South Asian nations, only Afghanistan fared worse.

The World Happiness Report, published by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, evaluates happiness levels based on factors such as GDP, social support, personal freedom, and corruption levels in each country.
