A shooting in Mumbai’s Chunabhatti area on Sunday afternoon resulted in one fatality and injuries to four others, including an eight-year-old girl.

Chunabhatti police have filed a murder case in connection with the incident, which involved the firing of approximately 21 bullets by two shooters. Two individuals have been detained by the police, according to sources.

DCP (Zone VI) Hemraj Rajput stated, “Around 3.15 pm in the Chunabhatti area, there was an incident of firing in which one person named Sumit alias Pappu Yerunkar was killed and three others were injured.” Yerunkar, who had been arrested in 2016 for firing at the office of Arihant builders but was acquitted earlier this year, was lodged in Kolhapur prison during this period.

“All the injured persons are stable. The accused have been identified and nine teams have been formed to search for them,” Rajput added.

The injured individuals include Yerunkar’s aides Roshan Lokhande (30) and Aakash Khandagle (31), as well as Madam Patil (54) and eight-year-old Trisha Sharma, who were passers-by. Patil sustained a bullet injury to his right thigh, Khandagle sustained a bullet injury to his right hand, and Sharma sustained injuries to her right hand and hip. They were all admitted to Sion hospital.

According to a source, the incident was a result of a rivalry between two gangs operating in the eastern suburbs of the city. The deceased’s brother, Swapnil, had previously contested BMC elections.
